Customs Duty and VAT Relief for UK Customers
Save on import charges when ordering disability aids from Mimi Blankets
Who Is Eligible?
According to HMRC regulations, you can claim VAT and customs duty relief if:
- The goods are purchased by or for a person with a disability
- The items are designed for the domestic or personal use of disabled people
- Your order value exceeds £135 (orders under £135 are not subject to VAT and customs duty)
Our wheelchair blankets and adaptive bibs qualify as disability aids under UK customs regulations.
For complete eligibility criteria, visit the official UK Government guidance: HMRC Customs Duty and VAT Relief for Disabled People
How Much Can You Save?
Without relief, UK customers typically pay:
- VAT: 20% of the product value plus shipping
- Customs Duty: Varies by product classification (typically 2.5-12%)
By claiming relief, eligible customers pay zero VAT and zero customs duty.
How to Claim Relief
The process involves two separate applications to HMRC. We're here to help make it as straightforward as possible.
Part 1: Claim Customs Duty Relief
Email HMRC's National Import Reliefs Unit (NIRU) at: nirumailbox@hmrc.gov.uk
Request the NIRU duty relief application form for disabled goods.
You'll need the following information for your application:
| Product | Tariff Classification Code |
|---|---|
| Wheelchair Blanket | 6301401000 |
| Adaptive Bib | 6217100090 |
Monika Mironov

Email your completed form back to NIRU at nirumailbox@hmrc.gov.uk
They will review your application and issue a certificate if approved.
Once you receive your approval certificate from NIRU, forward it to us at support@mimiblankets.com.au
We'll attach this to your shipment to ensure customs duty is waived on import.
Part 2: Claim VAT Relief
Complete the Eligibility Declaration for VAT Relief form available here:
Fill in Part 2 (Customer's Declaration) of the form.
Email the completed declaration to us at support@mimiblankets.com.au
We'll keep this on file for our records as required by HMRC regulations.
Important Timeline
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the approval process take?
HMRC typically processes customs duty relief applications within 5-10 business days, though this can vary. We recommend starting the process as soon as possible after placing your order.
Do I need to apply for relief every time I order?
Once approved, your NIRU certificate may be valid for multiple shipments. However, you'll need to check the terms of your specific certificate. The VAT relief declaration should be completed for each purchase.
What if I don't qualify for relief?
If you're not eligible or prefer not to go through the relief process, your order will be shipped normally. Royal Mail will contact you upon arrival in the UK to collect applicable VAT and customs duty before delivery.
Can I apply for relief after my order has shipped?
Unfortunately, the relief must be arranged before shipment to be effective. The customs documentation must accompany your parcel.
